Okehampton Community Stories

Mrs C is British-Filipino. She is a secondary school English teacher, who moved to Devon aged 12, from the Philippines. She now lives in Okehampton with her husband and daughters.

In her adult life, Mrs C has been relearning the Visayan language she grew up with, as well as nurturing her daughters’ connection to their heritage. When facing adversity, Mrs C speaks of how:

“You have to just learn to deal with it and just not let it eat you up.”

In her interview, Mrs C talks about moving to the UK at a young age, Filipino traditions, her daughter’s challenging of cultural assumptions, and the National Curriculum’s potential importance in encouraging acceptance of diversity.
