For over two centuries now, Ilfracombe has been a popular place to retire in – something that is still true even today.
From the retirement of an adventurer to become the curator of the new The Ilfracombe Museum, to former East India Company employees and international traders seeking a quiet place to slow everything down in, Ilfracombe has always been a popular location to it has always been a popular place within which to rest one’s head.
Lazar Stephen Lazar and Barbara Lazar (neé Kerakoose) were a married couple originally from Armenia with connections to the East India Company due to Lazar Stephen’s work as a successful trader. They appear – along with their two children, Arathoon and Stephen – age 9 and 10 respectively – in the 1861 census, living at 4, Sea View.
Franciscus Edwardus Van Camp was originally from Antwerp, Belgium. After 1901, with his wife Matilda, he moved to Ilfracombe and lived at 2, Bicclescombe Road.
Godfrey Zimmerman retired with his wife Elizabeth, first to Braunton, then to Ilfracombe, living along St Brannocks Road.
