We have developed these school activities based on the untold and hidden multi-cultural stories, found by the research volunteers for the Telling Our Stories, Finding Our Roots project in Honiton (2023-25). Volunteers also worked in Ilfracombe, and schools resources based on their research are available on this website too. .
The activities are aimed at Key Stage 2 and 3 pupils in primary and secondary schools, in Devon, Torbay and Plymouth. They will also be of interest to teachers outside Devon, to support teaching on equality, diversity, inclusion, and multicultural history. There are two sets of resources, based on two exhibition panels
‘Menageries, Boxing Booths & Black Lion Tamers – The Fair Comes to Honiton’
The exhibition panel with this title investigates Wombwell’s Travelling Menagerie and Martino Maccomo, a famous Black Lion Tamer. They both came to Honiton.
The Portuguese Umbrella Maker
Through the presence of a Portuguese umbrella maker in Honiton, this resource explores umbrella’s in 16th century Europe and Japan.
The activities include: Teachers’ Notes and Overview of Lessons, Teachers’ Lesson Plans, plus resource sheets, all provided as pdfs. The Telling Our Stories Honiton Exhibition is also provided as a pdf. These pdfs can be downloaded individually and directly from the website.
